The Beginning of an End

A letter just before I graduate

Dear Reader,

Every tree keeps a diary in its rings.

The good years are wide and generous. The difficult years are narrow, sometimes barely visible, but they are there. Every storm, every drought and every beautiful morning of sunlight becomes part of the tree's story. And somehow, through it all, the tree keeps growing.

I have been thinking about that lately. About how we grow without always noticing, and survive seasons we once thought would swallow us whole. Today, as I prepare to close this chapter of my life, I find myself looking at my own rings.

I remember the beginning: the dreams I carried and the plans I thought life would follow. I did not know that life had already written a different script. Some doors never opened, no matter how much I knocked. But a seed does not always get to choose where it falls. Sometimes all it can do is trust the soil and reach for the light. And so, I grew.

Somewhere between lectures, sleepless nights and countless ordinary days, I began to find myself. There were days when the hard work paid off and everything felt possible, and days when I wondered whether I was becoming enough. I could not wait to reach the finish line. Now that it is almost here, a part of me wishes I could slow time down. Isn't life funny?

The best moments were rarely the planned ones. They were the quick walks that turned into long gists, and the days that began like any other and quietly became memories. One more chance to sit with the people who made difficult days feel lighter. Somewhere along the way, strangers became family and an unfamiliar place became home. That is what I will miss most: not the buildings, but the people, and the moments we never thought to photograph.

To the friends who stayed and the ones who came for a season, thank you. To those who believed in me when my confidence was nowhere to be found, I hope you know how much it meant. Some of you may have forgotten the encouraging words you said, but I remember. And even where my memory fails, the impact remains.

A forest is never made beautiful by one tree alone. Some give shade, and some hold the soil together. That is what you have been to me, and I hope I have been that to someone too.

Not every ring was smooth. Friendships changed, expectations broke, and there were versions of myself I had to leave behind. But even trees must shed their leaves, and letting go does not make a season meaningless.

Above all, I am grateful to God, for strength I did not know I had and for grace that made a path where I could not see one. I am grateful for the victories that gave me confidence and the failures that taught me humility. I am grateful for the answered prayers and the ones that taught me patience, and for the people who celebrated me loudly and those who supported me quietly. To my family, words will never be enough. There are sacrifices that will never appear on a certificate: prayers whispered in private, and worries hidden behind reassuring smiles. This achievement carries my name, but it carries your sacrifices too. If I stand tall when I cross that stage, it is because I have been watered by love.

Soon there will be a gown and a certificate, and perhaps a few tears disguised as laughter. From the outside, it may look like one beautiful day. But I know that day contains years of becoming, and of finding the courage to begin again. If I could reach back to the person who started this journey, I would say, "Not everything will go to plan, but there is so much beauty ahead. You will laugh more than you expect, and you will meet people who change your life. Keep going."

I do not pretend to have everything figured out. The world beyond these walls will ask things of me that no examination ever could. But a tree does not stop growing because it has reached a certain height. It deepens its roots and makes room for life around it. So will I. I hope the years ahead find me not only successful but useful, not only accomplished but kind. I hope I never become too important to remember where I started.

This season is a celebration, yes, but it is also a farewell, to a younger me and to days I did not know I was living for the last time. There is something profoundly beautiful and heartbreaking about reaching the end of a chapter you once prayed so desperately to finish. Somewhere beneath all the joy, I am a little emotional too, because endings remind us how much we loved what we are leaving behind. Still, I would not trade this journey for anything.

Every ring tells a story. I did not arrive here unchanged. I arrived here grown.

So here is to everything that was, everything that is, and everything that is yet to come.

This is not the end of my story. It is simply the end of a beautiful beginning, and perhaps the beginning of an even more beautiful end.

With roots and gratitude,
Oluwaseyi
